SERMON SERIES: KEY VERSES FOR LIVING TODAY
July 5 - "God Can Use Your Weakness" - Jesus said, "My grace is enough for you. When you are weak, my power is made perfect in you." So I am happy to brag about my weakness. Then Christ's power can live in me. 2 Corinthinas 12:9

July 12 - "Living Wisely" - "Be very careful how you live. Do not live like those who are not wise, but live wisely. Use every chance you have for doing good, because these are evil times." Ephesians 5:15-16

July 19 - "Not Guilty" - "All have sinned; all fall short of God's glorious standard. Yet now, God with gracious kindness declares us not guilty. God has done this through Jesus Christ, who has freed us by taking away our sins." Romans 3:23-24

July 26 - "Piecing Life Together" - "May God himself, the God who makes everything holy and whole, make you holy and whole, put you together - spirit, soul, and body - and keep you fit for the coming of our Master, Jesus Christ." 1 Thessalonians 5:23

FAMILY AND FRIENDS SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL:
The summer Sunday School sessions for all ages will resume next Sunday, July 12th, at 9:15 AM and continue through July 19th. Come with your family and friends and see how the Mayberry Bible Studies use “real-life” events from the Andy Griffith Show to illustrate spiritual truths. All rising 2nd graders to adults are invited to come and discover what the Bible says about courage (July 12th) and trouble (July 19th). Next Sunday the class will meet in the Blue Room instead of Fellowship Hall. A very special children’s class (age 3 through rising 1st graders) will be held in Room 5 and a nursery
will be provided for infants and toddlers.

SOFTBALL TEAM SOARS IN TOURNAMENT GAMES
GAME ONE: After our opponents, from St. Andrews, led by 6-4 in the third inning, our team erupted in a “slugfest”. We scored 16 runs in the third inning and then added another 4 runs in the fourth inning. The umpire invoked the “mercy rule” for our 24-8 victory.
GAME TWO: When our opponents scored 4 runs in the top of the first inning, a chilling thought lingered for a moment like “brain freeze” after an ice cream sundae. This was the same team, Colonial Avenue Baptist, which had defeated us 22-21 last week. Would our squad bounce back? We did! Kyle Allen singled. Stacy Hutchison and Shawn McMahon walked. Chris Muller (well rested after vacationing in Hawaii) punched a single to score a run. Then, outfielder Eoin Coffey came to bat. He noted that the bases were loaded, and then blasted a line drive over the left fielder’s head and raced to third for a triple. The score was now tied, and we soon gained a 5-4 lead on a solid single by Will Landry.
In the second inning, our opponents quickly placed runners on first and second bases. The next batter launched a rocket-like shot toward third baseman, Bruce Coffey. Bruce tried to shield himself with his glove and knocked down the screaming line drive. The ball bounced into the outfield where shortstop, Nate Larson, dove to stop it, and then fired the ball back to Bruce at third base for a remarkable force out. The fans inhaled with amazement. The score was 9-9 after 4 innings. Will Landry singled crisply. Marc Koff and Bob Fiedler singled. Kyle Allen and Bruce Coffey batted in a run apiece. Stacy Hutchison slashed another single and Shawn McMahon wacked a triple to the outfield fence. The batting clinic continued: Chris Muller (4 for 4) laced a double followed by singles by Eoin (3 for 4), Will (3 for 4), and Marc (3 for 4). We were leading by 17-9. In the sixth inning it was time to apply the icing on the cake. Nate Larson and Bruce Coffey singled. Stacy Hutchison doubled and Shawn McMahon poked his second triple of the evening to finish the game. The umpire invoked the “mercy rule” for our 20-10 victory.
What’s next? We are 2 wins - 0 losses in tournament play. We play on Tuesday, July 7, at 6:15 PM and conclude the season on Thursday, July 9 (with a game or games to be announced later). All games are at Wasena Park, Field #2.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR NURSERY GREETERS:
It is so important to make sure all visitors and newcomers to Covenant feel welcome and comfortable during worship especially young parents leaving babies and small children in our care. We are looking for people willing to serve as "Nursery Greeters" before worship to help welcome parents and children to the Nursery and answer any questions. If you would like to help, please contact Kitty Mortara at the church or via e-mail on kmortara@covenantpresbch.org.

“TRAVELING MERCY” BAGS RETURN!
Just as God’s love and mercy are always present, wherever we go, so are the love and caring of your church family. As you depart this summer for vacations and travels, we would like to send along a reminder of your church home. Look for Covenant’s “Traveling Mercy” bags in Heritage Hall. The bags are filled with “Good News” activities so that your trip is fun and “faith-filled” for the whole family. Look for the garden trellis with the brightly colored bags and check one out before you leave on vacation. Our love and prayers go with you!

SHARE YOUR VACATION PICTURES:
If you have been on vacation already this summer, please bring in a few pictures to share with our Church family. We will post the pictures around the large map in Heritage Hall. A box is available on the table with the map to collect your pictures. If you took one of the “Traveling Mercies” bags with you and managed to take a picture with “flat Bob and Dusty,” please be sure to bring in a copy of that picture. It is interesting to see where our congregation travels, but it is also comforting to know you have returned safely to our Church home. Welcome back!

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BEING ON A VISITATION TEAM
to help keep in touch with some of our church family’s older members who can’t get out? A few hours each month is what’s needed. If you have questions, please contact Pastoral Partner

A PLACE FOR PRAYER AND REFLECTION
All members of the Covenant family are invited to visit the Red room in the new Sunday School wing. When not being used for Sunday School, this room has been set up as a small chapel to be used for prayer and reflection. A Bible is available for reading and reflecting on God's word. We invite you to step into the quietness of this place, enjoy the view of our Father's creation and find rest in His presence.

MINISTRY OF HOSPITALITY
We are looking for volunteers to serve in a ministry of hospitality by working at a reception desk in Heritage Hall during the week. Volunteers will greet visitors who come into our church or who call on the phone and be a resource to them for helpful information. The receptionists will also provide "easy tasks" support to the church staff. Morning and afternoon shifts are available. If you can serve once a week, once or twice a month, or every now and then, please sign up in Heritage Hall or contact Kitty Mortara on 989-3314 or kmortara@covenantpresbch.org. On this Sunday, please consider this opportunity to serve our church! "God has put it into their hearts to accomplish His purpose." (Revelation 17:17)

Preschool Programs
Thank you for inquiring about Covenant Presbyterian Preschool. The Preschool is operated by Covenant Presbyterian Church at 1831 Deyerle Road, Roanoke. It was organized in 1969 and has been in continuous operation since then and is a community outreach program of the church. The Preschool program is covered by Covenant Presbyterian Church's public liability insurance. Covenant Presbyterian Preschool meets all standards required by the State of Virginia to qualify for state exemption status.
Philosophy and Goals
Our philosophy of education is based on the belief that children learn and grow best through hands-on experiences. We wish to be a joyful and satisfying beginning for each child's school life. Our curriculum is designed to give children developmentally appropriate activities to allow them to grow socially, intellectually, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Our goal is that each child while being challenged will be successful and know that they are always loved and accepted. Our staff works hard to develop loving relationships with each child. Our curriculum and teacher methodology is based on Christian principles and values.
Programs
We offer 2, 3, and 5 day programs for children ages 2 1/2 to 5. Our teacher/child ratio is one teacher for every 10 children. The 2 1/2 year old class is limited to ten children with 2 teachers. All our classes are from 9:00--11:45, the Tuesday after Labor Day to the last Friday in May. We offer an extended lunch program on Wednesdays for the 3 and 4 year olds. Children bring their lunch and the school provides apple juice. Pick-up time is 1:00p.m.

We also offer a Mother's Day Out Program for children ages 3 months to 2 1/2 years on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  Contact the school for additional information on the Mother's Day Out program - 774-5222.
Daily Schedule
The children begin their day by going to their classrooms where their teacher welcomes them and helps them with any needs. The children then have a time for free play. Through their play time young children gain strength and confidence by being creative, making and implementing plans, interacting with their peers, and controlling their world. Each room is equipped with blocks, housekeeping corner, book corner, manipulative toys, art center, and games. Our curriculum is taught by units around which the week's activities (literature, project, special speakers, and on occasion snack) are planned. Our activities are designed to encourage growth in the child's fine and gross motor skills. The 4 and 5 year olds learn the alphabet, beginning sounds, and the sign letter alphabet. We also feel that it is important to instill in children of all ages a love for reading and therefore have a story time every day. We want our children to discover that school is fun! It is a place where they can grow and express themselves, be successful, and be loved and respected.
Special Activities
The preschool has a music teacher on staff and offers music three days a week. Physical development is an important part of our curriculum. The children have daily outdoor time on our well equipped playground. We also have a large room that lends itself well to physical activities on bad weather days. We take periodic field trips and have guest speakers come to visit. "Date with Dad" and "Muffins for Mom" are two very special events for the parents and the children. The children give two musical programs during the school year. We also encourage parents and friends to come and share their time and talents with us.
Chapel
As a Christian preschool we have a short chapel time several times a month. We feel it is important that God be included in our school program. We are also very aware of the diverse religious backgrounds of all our children and strive to teach respect for others' beliefs.
Tuition
Tuition rates are set at the beginning of each calendar year and are based on the actual costs of school operation. A $40.00 non-refundable registration fee is required upon application to the school. There is a $5.00/month deduction in tuition for two or more siblings attending the preschool. The extended lunch program is $3.00/day.
Prospective Parents
Prospective parents are invited to visit the school to observe the classrooms. To arrange a visit or to have any further questions answered, please call the Preschool (774-5222). We look forward to meeting you and showing our school!
